Major averages rose on lower volume ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Economic news was positive Wednesday as first-time jobless claims were well below estimates and the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index , the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey, and leading indicators were each better than expected. That said, key metrics the Fed uses to gauge recovery such as unemployment remain painfully high when factoring in those who have given up looking for work, thus any real as opposed to ceremonial tapering is perhaps a lot further away than one can expect.
The markets will reopen today for a half session.
